Golpo Holeo Shotti Movie Reviews :

first of all i would like to say that this is my first review for IMDb.COM,,i have rated movies in the past but never wrote a review .i saw an evening screening of this movie last day,and ever since wanted to share my feelings about the movie.one more reason is i wanted to thank the director (birsa dasgupta) for not screwing up the remake of one of my favorite Tamil movie(pizza). so the story starts with rudra (soham) a pizza delivery boy at a local pizza joint and anu (mimi) his wannabe story writer girlfriend who live together happily till a new challenge turns their life which eventually leads to what happens in the movie.the start is fantastic, giving enough time to show the romance between the lead characters, and the build up to the suspense that we watch later and the ending is really the coolest.the acting is where most remakes fail, which makes it feel a caricature of the original, but over here scores the highest point in the movie. mimi is simply fantastic as the eccentric budding writer girlfriend. soham is equally good if not better than vijay sethputhy in the original,JUST LIKE THE ENTIRE MOVIE equally as good if not better than the original.the supporting cast is also quite good, rajatava deserves special mention in this.the other points where the movie scores are the paced editing, photography, which at times are much better than the southern counterpart and also the music.the movie never gives a sec to yawn or look away as most Indian horror /thriller movies do.the director and the story exactly knows where the movie is going rather than typically wasting time on romance and unnecessary song and dance like most do.this one also has few songs which were beautifully shot but once you are into getting scared there is no getting back. all in all lets just say its the scariest Bengali movie i have seen so far ,which delves into people's psychology and superstition,on which the entire plot relies on.so thank you for the effort to the whole team.i would rate this 8/10 .

Baishe Srabon Movie  Reviews :

This is the first Indian movie if have ever watch all of the way through - enticed to it by the IMDb rating.

The basic premise is a of serial killings and the police work to try to find the culprit. Usually this kind of movie would have tense moments, a climactic end and hopefully some twists and turns along the way.

Instead, this movie had three musical montages! Maybe these are prerequisites in modern Indian cinema. The first montage certainly had a wide variety o settings - far greater than the rest of the movie, or than were needed. Those montages felt strangely out of place to me. I half-expected the cast to start dancing.

The acting also came across as over-blown - of a standard found in a low budget straight-to-DVD production. Again, and based on reading the other reviews, perhaps this is the approach taken in Indian cinema. It is reminiscent of silent movie stars.

I won't reveal the ending - but that too felt like something out of that aforementioned DVD style.

I enjoyed the basic premise and the cinematography. And I enjoyed some of the sights of India. Otherwise it was a mediocre experience with a flat ending.

The Royal Bengal Tiger Reviews :

"The Royal Bengal Tiger – A Good Pleasurable Thriller"

Please visit - http://iamalekhya.blogspot.in/

I really loved the trailer but I had a feeling that the ending twist could be somewhat like one of my favorite Hollywood Classic and I was right.

The story is about an ordinary man (Abir) whose life changes into extraordinary journey when he met his childhood buddy ,Jeet. His childhood friend becomes his motivator and charges him up into a tiger when he stands powerless when a cunning office coworker vandalizes his job, when his companion gets abuse in front of his eyes, when his tenant refuses to pay rent and humiliates him in front of his wife.

The weak point of the entire film lies within its story and the narration style. The first half is a bit dreary as it becomes too predictable about what is going to happen next. Nevertheless, the second half is interesting and I really loved the pace of this half.

Acting – Abir Chatterjee has done one of his best performances until date. From an innocent, weak man he transforms himself into a character with hardly contained fury and spanking poise. He portrayed the character so well.Jeet does something different from his other movies. Here he does not beat the bad people but he helps his friend to fight back the society.Shraddha Das and Priyanka are good

Direction – The movie can be paced the movie a little bit. I love the concept, which he wanted to portray. It is a very good attempt for his first flick.

Music – I liked the song "Bondhu".

Therefore, it is a very nice movie with good thrill all over. It is one time must watch :) However, if you are a Hollywood lover, then you will feel that the ending is quite similar to one of the best thriller-drama. 3.5/5

 Storyline :

Sumon, is compelled to grow up in the city's underworld as mafia lord Osman Ali's killer machine. After killing a pregnant woman, who is Osman Ali's girlfriend, carrying his illegitimate child, Sumon's conscience leads him to defy Ali's order.

Chorabali Movie Reviews :

OK, let me make one thing clear first. Chorabali isn't any masterpiece. Yet, people are praising it because of one reason. The director, Redoan Roni made a fully mainstream commercial cinema at a time when the industry seems to be dying. When his own peers (i.e. Mustafa Kamal Raaz etc) and even his mentor (Sarwar Farooki) are making extended TV dramas (or are they Telefilms?) and releasing them in 1 or 2 cinema halls and premiering them on TV on the first day itself. They need to stop kidding themselves and the audience. Those long dramas are not feature films and are clearly made for the TV screen. In such circumstances, Roni broke the barrier and made a true mainstream Bangla cinema. It's not an art film which caters to only the high class people. It has action, romance, drama and even an item song (although poorly executed).

So, the story revolves around a killer who serves a corrupt politician. The story is highly relevant to Bangladeshi society. However, there are some major plot holes here and there. The director lefts some important questions unanswered. Thus, the story ultimately falls short. However, the director's sincerity makes up for it. You will never guess that it is Roni's first film. He shows complete control of his content. The scenes are executed professionally, specially the camera angles are highly effective. The cinematography is world class. The director of photography was in terrific form and no Bangladeshi cinema had this good visuals before this. The background score is good. however the music was wasted because only short versions were played in the background. And the only song which was fully picturised was the item song which was not visually pleasant.

Indraneel was good as the main protagonist. He is an established actor and that shows in the confidence with which he carried out his role. His toned physique and melancholy personality added to the role. Joya Ahsan wasn't given a meaty role. So she is relegated to just emanating beauty on the screen and she does that with panache. But, the show stealer was Shahidujjaman Selim. He was a complete package. He was perfect as the heinous villain. Every scene was done with conviction and a touch of humanity. Hats off to this man as he is the one who makes you forget about the weak plot and just enjoy the dialogues instead.

Overall, it is an OK film. Not more, not less. As Roni's first film we can certainly be generous and forgive him for the plot. But next time we wish Roni doesn't write the story himself and instead finds a good scriptwriter. Also, having all the actors from Bangladesh would also help strike a chord with the Bangladeshi audience. I wanted to give it a 6 but I gave one point extra considering it was Roni's first film and because of Shadiujjaman Selim's performance. It is a highly watchable film and every Bengali should watch it at least once and encourage young directors like Roni to make better cinema.

This film is light-years ahead of the other mainstream movies being made in Bangladesh, but still has a long way to go before it becomes world class. But this just might be the kick the industry needed to go bring back the golden age of cinema back from the grave!

Badshahi Angti Movie Reviews :

Sandip Ray's previous Feluda-venture 'Royal Bengal Rahasya' (2011) was no less than a masterpiece. And considering the book 'Badshahi Angti' is one of the best Feluda adventures ever, I was expecting this to become the best Feluda-movie of all-time. But the overall experience left me discontented.

The film was essentially a tale of two halves. The 1st half was almost a disaster. One of the hall-marks of the Ray-films are the adrenalin- pumping openings, aided with pulsating background music. But since RBR, Ray has inexplicably decided to do away with these 2 USPs of his films. While these were the only drawbacks in RBR, here it spoils the mood to such an extent that it never gets recovered until post-interval. It's not that there weren't any options. From Pierilal's death to the burglary in Dr. Srivastav's house, there were possibilities galore; but the director simply didn't show any interest!

The intro-scene of the new Feluda-&-Topshe is well-shot. But after that the entire episode involving Dr. Srivastav and the 'ring' is narrated through simple dialogues for 10-15 minutes, which is not just boring but also tough to follow! There should have been some use of flash-backs or graphic depiction of the history of the ring (as in 'Gorosthane Sabdhan') to add some element of interest. Even after that, the 'Bhool Bhulaiya' is another letdown. Some of the long-shots are digitally implanted which don't evade the eye. Things pick up from the visit to Banabihari Babu's residence; but that's not enough to salvage the 1st half.

Just when I had resigned to this being another disappointment from Ray after 'Jekhane Bhooter Bhoy' (2012), the man engineers a stunning comeback in the 2nd half! It becomes an altogether different film post- interval with the events picking up pace and the mystery thickening. The audiences are forced to apply their brains all through or else they run the risk of losing track... just as it should have been from the start. It seemed the director had finally rose from his slumber after snoozing all through the 1st half!

The cinematography is one of the high-points of the film as it captures all the myriad beauties of Lucknow and Haridwar in all its splendor (Although the detailed closeups of the Galouti Kebab and Biriyanis were comical!). The VFX of the animals are satisfactory by Tollywood standards.

Cast-wise, Abir Chatterjee's pre-built image as Byomkesh makes it all the more easy to accept him as Feluda. Sourav Das as Topshe could have been better, while Paran Bannerjee is a revelation in perhaps the strongest role of his career! It's only Tathagata who manages to stand out among the rest of the cast. Special mention must be made of Dwijen Bannerjee whose particular casting was a masterstroke!

The film is a clean-&-simple family entertainer; but not a proper suspense-thriller. Although the director continues with the whodunit format, the eventual disclosure of the culprit won't come as any surprise to anyone (unlike RBR). It's because just 2 of the wide-bevy of characters are properly cultivated and developed. Hence, the other characters don't arise any kind of suspicion, which is unlike the novel. This is one of the few stories featuring Topshe's father and I had hoped for his interactions with Feluda-&-Topshe to be explored a bit more.

This isn't Ray's best Feluda-film by any stretch (even 'Kailashe Kelenkari' and 'Tintoretor Jishu' were better films for their times); but it's far better than his non-Feluda flicks like JBB or 'Chaar'. What's worrying is that the man has turned an outstanding novel like BA into just a moderately good film. Hence, when he adapts a not-so-good 'Gangtoke Gondogol' up-next, one must really keep their fingers crossed for the end-result...!

Abar Byomkesh (2012) Full Movie Download

The quiet town is full of colorful, cheerful characters. But when a photograph theft is followed by a horrific murder, Byomkesh understands that no one in the town is what they seem to be.

Abar Byomkesh Movie Reviews :

Bengalis' love for suspense and detective crime thrillers is boundless. But Feluda is the only big-screen detective character they got (barring Ray's Chiriyakhana, where Mahanayak essayed the role of Byomkesh) till date to satisfy their fathomless craving for such stories. But not anymore. With a crisp, tight and clean script and smart execution Anjan Dutt's Byomkesh looks like a right mix of everything that Bengalis ever wanted. If Rajit Kapur's Byomkesh act was immensely popular on the small screen, Abir Chatterjee does it credibly too and with conviction on the big screen.

Saswata as Ajit is restricted and into his character, Swagata Mukherjee as Nonibala, the lady high on testosterone and with alternative lifestyle, delivers a dazzling act, Swastika as Shiuli the attractive bar singer is convincing too, Chandan Sen as Bantul, the arms dealer, is astounding, Biswajit Chakraborty as Anadi Haldar, a rich old man with many flaws is stupendous and Rudranil as the restricted and submissive Prabhat deserves credit.

The story, which revolves around Anadi Haldar, a rich old man, his adopted son Prabhat and Nonibala, the woman, who raised Probhat, is set against the backdrop of World War II and is improvised at places to fit into the big screen mode. At places, the detailing is even cut short to make it look crisp and seem fast-paced. Those, who haven't read the book by Saradindu Bandyopadhyay and is only watching the film, will hardly notice the cut short detailing. The scene, where Abir camouflages himself in the getup of a Sardarji is a little improvised but never looks incompatible with the flow. Also in the original novel, Shiuli is a singer, who works in a jolsha whereas, in the film, she sings in a hotel in Park Street.

Neel Dutt's scores are in sync with the feel, mood and suspense. In fact, Ujjaini's Ki hoy ki hoy is already rising the popularity chart. All in all, Dutt's BB, with its wholesome dose of thrill, has all the potential to win the hearts of moviegoers.

Buno Haansh Movie Reviews :

A must watch..! A film made in heaven.. a life of a common man..his change from being the simple Amal to an unknown supplier from and to different countries.. his situation of desperation to end up needs of his family.. a good life for his love interest to making it big with one shot.. one can easily relate to Amal..

though the story line could have been made a little bit better with a more thrilling climax.. a little more suspense at the end should have grossed it a "Suspense Thriller" genre.. and the cinematography needs an applaud..it made it look more realistic..and the main thing..the music..Shantanu Moitra did a superb job..and Director Aniruddha Roy Choudhury placed it very well and maintained the pace..the songs fitted very well with some truly awesome lyrics and background score

Storyline :

Mishawr Rohoshyo, a thriller, is The Egyptian Mystery to be solved by detective Raja Roy Chowdhury to unearth an Egyptian fortune. The all's-not-well quest takes Kakababu and Santu into a bumpy ride which finally ends at the baffling Egyptian tombs.

Mishawr Rawhoshyo Movie Reviews :

Srijit Mukherjee's 5th directorial venture fails to meet the expectation. Only positive side of the movie is performance by Prosenjeet. Indraneel Sengupta does well as Hani Alkadi. The movie fails to create the suspense and thrill expected from a Kakababu story. The director fails to understand that too much melodrama and intellectual gibberish in a thriller doesn't work always. It was unnecessarily stretched by at least 30 min. The characters of Neel , Swastika and Riddhi as Santu's love interest were complete misfit. Was JNU campus tour necessary ? Rajesh Sharma does a decent job. Too much editing of the original story takes away a lot of fun. Hope the directors will keep these in mind. The screenplay and locations are well done. Watch Kahani - how to show a thriller in a simple way without being preachy.

Bymokesh phire Elo Movie  Reviews :

A good detective story accurately portrays the crime and the logical analysis which eventually reveals it. A "great" detective story is something which goes beyond it.

First, it focuses on the social aspects of the story by describing the characters and the often complex relationships between them. Second, it not only reveals the criminal but also reveals why might he have committed the crime or for that matter what situations might have led (forced) him to commit the crime. Towards the end of a great detective story the reader (viewer) is bound to empathize with the criminal.

This film is a great cinematic version of a great detective story. The acting is excellent. Abir's role as the detective Byomkesh playing battle of wits on one hand, and becoming a dutiful husband back in his home on the other would have made the author (Sharadindu) proud. Shaswata plays a cameo in a short role as Ajit. Generally speaking, the direction and screenplay are good, and cinematography is excellent accurately capturing the period of the early 70s.

The film is not flawless though. The character of Benimadhav is not very well developed. Moreover, what Byomkesh refers to as a Bengali novel was actually a book of poems by Tagore.

Besides these little flaws, the film is almost perfect and is definitely the best Byomkesh film delivered till date.

Radha (Suchitra Sen), a nurse at a mental hospital, is asked by the head doctor (Pahari Sanyal) to try an experimental technique with a somewhat amnesiac, depressed inmate (Vasant Choudhury) - she has to pretend to be in love with him to bring him back to normal. Remade in Hindi as Khamoshi with Waheeda Rehman playing the Suchitra Sen character, this film still stands the test of time. Performances are good.

Deep Jweley Jai Movie Reviews :

If you are a Hindi movie buff you will most probably have watched 'Khamoshi'. In case you didn't know, this is the movie 'khamoshi' was inspired from. In all fairness both are excellent!I challenge anybody (not those without a heart and a soul)to watch this and not cry!!It will take some doing! Suchitra Sen plays a nurse in an mental asylum who falls for her patient. That tells you that everything doesn't end up 'happily everafter' for her.Man!How much pain can one take! Suchitra as usual is simply superb. You should see her expressions when the song 'Ei raat tomar amar' plays. That says it all! I had tears in my eyes.Anil Chatterjee as the patient is also great. Both movies had excellent soundtracks. Again Hemanta Mukherjee (aka Hemant Kumar in bollywood)at his melodious best. I guarantee you'll hum these for a while after the movie.

As the expression goes 'They don't make them as they used to. Not anymore!'I wish movies like these were made now but i cant see anyone good enough to play these characters. You need a depth in your soul to penetrate the complexity of the characters but i guess nobody is that deep anymore.

Watch this movie. Its an unforgettable experience!

The Music Room (1958) Full Movie Download

Depicts the end days of a decadent zamindar (landlord) in Bengal, and his efforts to uphold his family prestige even when faced with economic adversity.

Director :  Satyajit Ray

Writers : Tarashankar Banerjee (based on the story by) (as Tarashankar Bandhopadhaya) , Satyajit Ray (script) .

Stars : Chhabi Biswas, Sardar Akhtar, Gangapada Basu |

Storyline :

Huzur Biswamghar Roy is a rich landowner who lives in a palace with his wife and son and his many servants. His passion - his wife would call it his addiction - is music and he spends a great deal of his fortune on concerts held for the locals in his magnificent music room. His wealth is in decline however. His lands are being eroded by the local river and he pays for the concert he arranges for his son's coming of age party by selling some of the family jewels. When his neighbor Ganguli invites him to a party at his house, Roy decides to one up him and organizes a lavish party for the same day - costing him the last of the jewels. After his wife and son are killed in a storm, Roy becomes something of a recluse, closing up the music room. Now, many years later he decides to have one final concert, spending the last of his money to again outdo - and spite - Ganguli.

The Music Room Movie Reviews :

Good heavens! This is about as far from Bollywood movies (cheesy musicals) as one could get. Jalsaghar is a poignant rendering of social transition at the personal level -- the indigent aristocrat whose delusive and self-destructive obsession with bringing his music room back to life shields him from the reality of his family's economic and social collapse, and indeed hastens it; the showy nouveau-riche neighbor who embodies the rise of a new social order based on economic achievement rather than aristocratic roots and inherited wealth. There are parallels to Chekhov and Faulkner (Snopeses and Sartorises). The black and white images (the white horse!) are stunning. I saw this film in the 1980s, and remember it more clearly than the movie I saw last night. It is truly a classic.

Saptapadi Movie Reviews :

Saptapadi is one of the greatest love story ever produced in India. All the actors and actress gave their careers best performance in this movie like Uttam Kumar, Suchitra Sen, Chhabi Biswas, Chhaya Devi, Pahadi Sanyal and last but not the least Tarun Kumar. Set in World War II, the reverend Krishnendu (Uttam Kumar) runs a military hospital in Bankura. A drunken Anglo-Indian woman soldier is brought to him for treatment and he recognized her as his former love Rina Brown (Suchitra Sen). The two of them were fellow medical students. Rina's father agrees to the match providing Krishnendu converts to Christianity. Krishnendu's orthodox fathervisits Rina and tells her he will never accept this marriage and pleads with Rina to let Krishnendu go. Rina sacrifices her love even as Krishnendu converts to Christianity. Ultimately the lovers are united in the midst of the war. The film, based on a story by Tarashankar Banerjee, is undoubtedly one of the most memorable films of the magical Uttam - Suchitra combination.

It is 19 April, Aditi's father's death anniversary, which her mother appears to have forgotten. Misunderstanding and temperamental conflicts creates an air of suffocation for both.
Aditi's prospective husband, Prosenjit Chatterjee dumps her after his family learns of her mother's profession soon after the public announcement of Sarojini's award. Heartbroken, Aditi decides to attempt suicide, which her mother finds out leading mother and daughter into a heart-to-heart conversation. Gradually they unlock two decades of rage and rancor, pain and bitterness to each other. Untold facts finally get deciphered, misunderstandings clear out. All hint to the final question: "Will Aditi ultimately be able to forgive her mother?"

Unishe April Movie Reviews

Riruporno Ghosh is a brilliant director. The cinematography and the story are well built. Aparna Sen is awesome in her role. Both the personality of a dancer and the love of a mother are perfectly bloomed in the character of Sarojini. Debashree Roy is just great in the role of Aditi.I am a great fan of her. Her performance in this movie is one of best. The dialogs between mom and daughter are also well built.

The complexity of the relationship between mom and daughter is tremendously picturized. The complexity between Sarojini and her late husband is actually the picture of our society. The jealousy a husband to his famous wife is very common. The same thing in the case of accepting Aditi by her lover as wife because she is a daughter of a dancer. The ending is just perfect.

Hemlock Society Movie Reviews

Concept: I'm really amazed by the concept of the movie. I have never seen such a movie in any language. Read one story in my childhood in similar concept and happened to come by an article few days ago. But, I could never imagine someone would ever dare to make a movie on this topic. Topic? If summarized its "Assisted Suicide"! To make it more clear, let me translate the tagline of the movie i.e. "Morbe moro chorio na" (Die if you want but don't embarrass). So there is private organization which helps people to commit suicide successfully! Provides a 3 days crash course to enlighten the participants about various methods to suicide. What not to do and what to do etc. Meghna(Koel Mallik) recently has broken up with her bf. She's very upset after breaking up a 14yrs long relationship and wants to end herself. Enter Ananda Kar(Parambrata) the CEO of "Hemlock Society". He asks her to join the course so she could die properly without embarrassing everyone including herself. Rest you need to see.

Character development: Only two characters come into focus since the movie begins. Meghna and Ananda, even though I would say its Koel's movie. She first time got the chance to break out of her usual happy, bubbly, naughty characters. Her d-glam representation is also something she tried first time. And, I love her so I liked her anyway Supporting characters are also very strong actors but not much explored.

Direction: So Srijit Mukherjee made a hat-trick with his 3rd movie. Another totally different subject executed very well. A very beautifully crafted movie. Well executed first half and not so well executed second half. But, I've a question to Srijit, what is this obsession of him to explain everything, every character getting justice. Life is boring, zero dramatic. Why not keep that way. Would have really loved it if the "6 months later" part was not there.

Screenplay: Slow but steady. At a length of 2 and half hours its too much. Movies on such concept should be crisp and short. Which has the scope to impact to audience. Last few minutes just dilutes everything, breaks the quirky environment it created from start.

Cinematography: Good but not great.

Songs and background score: Few are already hit. Nice mix of pop and normal filmy music. Background music is apt to situations.

Editing: Poor job with editing. The movie should have been 30 minutes shorter.

Verdict: Even with few downside this movie wins (or would win) hearts because of its subject and great acting. Watch it even if you have to watch it with subs.

What no one expects is that he will be so broken by everything that has happened that he will sink into a well of passivity and despair.

Tahader Katha Movie Reviews

Buddhadeb Dasgupta's Tahader Katha is really up there with the best of Tarkovsky (maybe a slight exaggeration though). The lateral tracking shots are incredibly beautiful. Like Tarkovsky, Dasgupta likes to have his camera wander off to capture the still lives of inanimate objects that are given poetic significance: swings, mirrors, puddles. Like Tarkovsky, Dasgupta likes the sound of cuckoo in the background, and the presence of wandering horses in the distant. To sample Dasgupta's masterful stroke, look no further than the scene with the wife and the husband during a night of pouring rain. I have never seen the environment used to such evocative power, not since Tarkovsky's Sacrifice.

The film runs approximately 91 minutes, half of what IMDb promises, although according to John Hood this running time seems to be correct - at least identical to what he has seen.

She loves her son very much and wants him to succeed, but she does not want to be left alone.

Aparajito Movie Reviews

Each of the three films of the Apu Trilogy exhibit the extraordinary quality of a documentary film on the conditions of life in India at the time they are set. I think this is what I like best in them through numerous viewings. The films are shot in locations that appear untouched by any art department
  • remote countryside in Bengal, the great cities - Benares and Calcutta.
The characters eke out an adequate life in their sufficient poverty - a life sustained by their faith and simple devotion to one another. At the same time there are moments that are pure cinema. There is an exquisite swish pan cut from Kurana (the mother) leaning against a tree, full of emptiness as Apu has just left for Calcutta, to the swift dynamo of the train crossing a bridge with the trestles a blur. At the moment Kanu (the father) gives up his soul a flock of birds alights over the Ganges. Later as Kurana is gradually sinking into the depths of loneliness - a sickness unto death - she has a vision of fireflies swirling around in the falling darkness.

These films traverse the drama of life and death touching gently on all of the salient points along the path. They put us face to face with the challenge of living in a world, which constantly gives us disappointment. At the same time there is a celebration of that ineffable quality which gives life meaning.

Heerak Rajar Deshe Movie Reviews :

This was an amazing movie. Then again, I grew up with the songs of the trilogy. It was amazing, and a must see for people who haven't seen it.

The Rajah is so funny at times, you just laugh along with him. Goopy and Bagha are amazing in their roles, and the slippers that take them anywhere crack me up. They eat whatever they want, when the sing, the world stops. Its amazing. A must see for the whole family.

As a director, Satyajit Ray outdid himself, and he made a timeless classic for people of all ages. I laughed, and I laughed. Its an AMAZING comedy.

The effects are also really good for that time period. Ray is a magician with movies, screenplay, and effects. This movie is a stellar example of that.

As food shortages reach catastrophic proportions, Gangacharan attempts to preserve his privileged situation, while his generous wife, Ananga, conversely tries to help and support the community.

 Director: Satyajit Ray

Stars: Soumitra Chatterjee, Bobita, Sandhya Roy |

Storyline

Gangacharan is the new Brahmin of a village, where he assumes various duties: teaching, organizing religious events, and trying to prevent epidemics. But in that year 1943, war is raging (as reminded by the planes occasionally heard flying over the countryside), and a major famine is under way. As food shortages reach catastrophic proportions, Gangacharan attempts to preserve his privileged situation, while his generous wife, Ananga, conversely tries to help and support the community.

Ashani Sanket Movie Reviews

The chemistry between Chatterjee and Babita is amazing in this classic study of the conflicts between religion, station, and the inner workings of human souls. Ray's best-known masterpiece improves with repeated viewings. Every time, I watch it, I pick up new nuances, particular on Babita's performance. The thin lines between devout and callous, love and loathing, & heroism and insanity have never been examined more in-depth or with greater insights. On one level, great art, on another flawlessly technical, but overwhelmingly emotionally draining in the best possible way.

Abhijaan Movie Reviews :

I saw this movie a long time ago but it still sticks with me. It is one of those movies you don't forget once you have seen it, and also don't think too much about. Its a simple pastoral romance written by one of the greatest Bengali writers, Tarashankar. Ray always knew the importance of the story, and he chose wisely from writers like Bibhutibhushan, Tagore and others. In this movie, made in a retro sepia tone which promotes a feeling of otherworldliness and decrepitude at the same time, Ray sticks to the storyline and elicits some great performances from Soumitra, Waheeda Rahman, Robi Ghosh and the magnificent Charuprakash Ghosh, a Ray favorite, who nails the difficult role of the seedy bania as counterpoint to Soumitra's ramrod Punjabi taxi driver. The strange admixture of the arid rural landscapes, ramshackle Chevrolet cabs, drunken depot operators, nepotist petty officials, prostitutes, smugglers and Christians comes together in a sweeping narrative that never rests for a moment in its grand mission - to tell a story to a spellbound audience
